The Grand Hotel: a novel

By Scott Kenemore

The Sexton’s musings:

Calling all anthology movie lovers! This is the book for you! I personally have always loved movies like Tales from the Crypt (1972),  From Beyond the Grave (1974), Tales of Halloween (2015), Creepshow (1982), All Hallows Eve (2013), Body Bags (1993) and Trick ‘r Treat (2007) just to name a few. Tip of the iceberg. This book is exactly like that with a wonderful wrap around story that will have you wondering exactly what is going on. Each new guest visited on the tour presents a story that provides the reader with twists and turns along with paths that are thought provoking. Some of the stories are subtle pieces with beautiful unusual monsters and others are very much traditional in nature involving ghosts and demons. It is engaging from start to finish. Easy to immerse yourself as one of the tour goers. And while you may have a suspicion of what the tour goers and guests all have in common is it not the journey that we are there for. Easy to read. The words flow easily and before you know it you are at the end of the journey. I was honestly sad that is was over. I wanted them to continue to visit guests. Truly one of the better books that I have read in a while. There is a constant push to proceed, not just to learn how the story ends but also to have the pleasure of meeting the next guest on the tour. The characters are well thought out and for the most part likeable. I feel that characters in a book are much like co-workers in that you don’t have to like everyone you just have to recognize that they have their place. The end for me was somewhat bitter sweet. Perhaps you will give it a try as this story has plenty to consume and satisfy.

Happy Devouring!
